It’s Fall Ya’ll!

Looks like fall…Smells like fall…Feels like fall…It’s fall ya’ll!  Hooray!

IMG_8379

I welcome October with open arms every year…it’s November and December that get a little less love : )  This October obviously comes with some extra excitement (#9days until the wedding).  Plus, we will be recovering/ mini-mooning in Door County, Wisconsin and I am hoping to see colors like these!

IMG_8366

I know I just set September goals, but let’s take a look and see how I did!

September Goals

Bike More…Nope!

Blog More…Working on it!

Get Wedding Organized…Yes, I’m feeling GOOD!

Keep Calm…there’s been a lot of yoga to help me here (see THIS post), but a few people have told me that I am exceptionally calm for being almost 1 week from wedding day!

And Enjoy the ride…loving EVERY moment and excited to see it all come together!

JenniferandBryan-6

Okay, so it’s no surprise that I only have one goal for October and that is to just be present and appreciate this unique and special time!  Afterwards, I’m looking forward to getting my life and house back to ‘normal’ with more time to sleep, cook, and blog.

What are you most excited for this fall?

What are your fall goals?

Oh September…I Love You Too!

Even though the days are shorter, my mornings darker, and the weather cooler, I still love me some September.  I mean…the changing leaves, the football, not to mention the chili…Mmm! It’s a good month to curl up on the couch with my kitty and enjoy the fresh air and fun!

IMG_20150913_113625883

Before I get too excited about September, I need to check in on August goals.  A little late, I know, but I’ve been a little busy : )

August Goals

Sleep More (get back up to 8 hours)-Oh man…I failed!  Vacations don’t always equal sleep when you are dancing at the club until the wee hours, and during the week nights, I’ve only been getting about 7 hours a night.  I definitely feel it!

Slow Down (and breathe)-Vacation helped with this one, but I would say that packed weekends have had me feeling more frazzled than refreshed.

Keep it Clean (especially on vacation)-I would say that I’ve been doing a good job of staying clean and healthy while also indulging in local faves.  Nashville had some amazing food!  Bonuts anyone? And I baked up two awesome new recipes…coming soon!

Find Wedding Shoes-I think I’m down to two!

#21Days!!!

August is my Favorite Month!

IMG_20150803_054316728_HDR

Hey!  Let’s talk weekend!  Because mine was fun and quick (yup…working again on Monday this week, but for a good reason!)

IMG_20150731_131151

Friday was the last kids yoga class of summer. I have another great group of kiddos and it was a BLAST!

Friday night, the BOY and I took it easy because he was accompanying me to the gym early Saturday morning.  Yes, folks…you heard that correctly.  The BOY was interested in trying some boxing, so he got his first lesson while I worked every one of my muscles from head to toe with the trainer.

IMG_20150801_091855155_HDR

I recouped with a protein smoothie while working out some wedding stuff.  And then, we had a quick stop at the mall before going to my parents for more wedding work.  And then swung by the BOY’s sister’s house for a BBQ.  We arrived back home to a gorgeous Saturday evening that just begged to be enjoyed with backyard dinner and wine.

IMG_20150801_200936388 IMG_20150801_201039392

And some cuddles from kitten!

IMG_20150801_185038637

Sunday morning, I planned to do an outdoor yoga class that just happens to be at the same park where we play tennis.  The game plan was to yoga and then meet the BOY for a game of tennis.  The yoga class got moved indoors, but I was still able to fit both in before our lunch plans with friends.  Sadly, I don’t have any pictures (except for this colorful one their adorable daughter drew me) because I left my phone at home.

IMG_20150802_194311090

Sunday night was the usual laundry, dinner, paperwork, crash!

Just like that…my weekend was over!

IMG_20150801_185002615

Just like July…you blink and then it’s over!

Okay…so now let’s talk goals because somehow it is August.  August?!

July Goals

Strength Train 2x Each Week– Believe it or not, I have actually enjoyed adding the extra day of strength.  My muscles look better, and I am getting stronger.  I can’t wait to keep it up through the fall!

Keep it Clean, Add in Green– I have been pretty good about cleaning up my diet.  My stomach is feeling better, which has been awesome and I bought a new bathing suit : )

Stay the Course with Wedding Planning (and Stay Calm!)– Invites are out and on we go!

Have the Best Bachelorette Weekend!- It was AMAZING!!!

So August is one of those months that is so busy, you may not hear from me. I have a wedding shower, two vacations, the busiest work schedule I’ve ever seen amongst everything else, and let’ s not forget my birthday : )  Historically speaking, busy months lead to me stressing like crazy which often leads to illness.  So this months goals are geared towards keeping me from losing my mind and staying healthy!

August Goals

Slow Down (and breathe)

Keep it Clean (especially on vacation)

What are your August goals?

New Month…New Goals!

The BOY and I had an ‘Us’ weekend!  We spent Saturday morning hiking, picnicing, and napping (in that order) and then relaxed a bit as I soaked in the start of the Tour de France time trials.  The BOY grilled dinner and we sat out back enjoying the gorgeous summer evening with one of our favorite wines.

IMG_20150704_184546002_HDR

And then we crashed the neighbors party for a couple more cocktails.  We did the responsible ‘go to bed around midnight’ thing, and I was happy because I had biking plans with a friend Sunday morning.

IMG_20150704_203305107

I woke up feeling a little more tired than I would have wanted (perhaps I had too many drinks with our neighbors).  I packed up my car and pulled my bike stuff together.  It’s been too long since I’ve gone for a bike, ride and I am way out of practice.  I had to turn around twice because I forgot my helmet and bike lock.

IMG_20150705_112236038

I met my friend at a forest preserve to do a BRICK. She is doing a triathlon and has an interesting training program that involves intervals of biking and running.  Which is what we did for about an hour and then continued to bike for another 45 minutes.  It was a gorgeous day for a bike ride and my head cleared up quickly.  Afterwards, we went for coffee and supplements at the Starbucks/Whole Foods.

IMG_20150705_112246686

I returned home feeling super tired, but dove into my never ending house and wedding to do list.  I also noticed that my bike chain is rusted and needed to make an appointment to bring it in.  It felt amazing to start crossing things off, and I was reminded about why it was so important to have some down time this weekend.  I also used my time to watch more of the tour, loving the views of the Netherlands and the thrill of the sprint.

I did a big Bucket List post yesterday, but then remember that I had more short term goals to think about…so here we go!

June Goals

Eat Clean, Train Dirty– I cleaned up my diet this month and have been exercising often and hard.  The benefits…my clothes fit better, I have more energy, and my stomach has calmed down.

Cook and Bake– I got myself back into the kitchen after a bit of a ‘lack of time’ induced hiatus.  This month, I shared some new dinner recipes and of course some incredible ice cream recipes!

Drink More Water– My water bottle has been with me all day every day.

Slow Down and Enjoy Every Moment!- I had a great talk about this with my friend during our morning bike ride.  It’s always a challenge, but well worth the effort.  There were some great moments to enjoy this month!

IMG_20150704_194822840

July Goals

Strength Train 2x Each Week

Keep it Clean, Add in Green

Stay the Course with Wedding Planning (and Stay Calm!)

Have the Best Bachelorette Weekend!

Beginnings…

The Tour de France began today!  If you follow my blog then you know that this brings lots of excitement to our house…and by our house, I mean me! (Insert eye roll from BOY who claims that the tour is boring but seems to know a lot about the peloton).  For the second year in a row, I was up before my alarm on the 4th of July.  I came straight downstairs to turn on the TV and dive into the tour.  I only caught the pre race updates on teams and the ‘Big Four’ while I sipped tea and whipped up eggs.  The BOY and I planned to go to Starved Rock today, but flooding led to parking lot closures and we didn’t want to drive almost 2 hours and not get to hike.

IMG_20150704_102833421

Instead, we drove 45 minutes to Waterfall Glen.  This area is more of a path than a state park and from where we parked, the waterfall was quite a ‘hike’…especially since we started off in the wrong direction.  The path was well used but not crowded as we passed bikers, dogs, and runners.  There was a good amount of shade as we made our way towards the waterfall.

IMG_20150704_102859044

We were tired when we arrived and stopped to rest our feet a bit and sip some water.

IMG_20150704_102920948_HDR IMG_20150704_103013

I must say that the waterfall was cool, but I was hoping that there was more than one!  The bugs made it tough to stay still, so after a quick break we hiked back to our car.

IMG_20150704_103231

By the time we reached our car, which was packed with a picnic lunch, we had walked over 6 miles.  There wasn’t a great place to pop a squat, so we decided to drive back towards home.  There is a great park, where I run in the mornings, a few blocks away from our house.  We pass it almost every day and always talk about picnicing, but never do.  We settled under a shady tree by the lake on this perfect day.

IMG_20150704_122343504 IMG_20150704_122421352

With a full tummy, I could have fallen asleep on our blanket!

IMG_20150704_124627753

Instead, we waited until we were back home to cuddle in (with Cooper, of course) for an afternoon nap!  Then, woke back up to watch the beginning of the Tour!

I can’t believe that it’s July and the beginning of the second half of the year (like my glass half full attitude?).  It occurred to me yesterday that meant I needed to check in with my bucket list!  This year has been so busy (work, wedding, life) that I barely remember what’s on my bucket list!

2015 Bucket List

LIFE

Set and follow a budget (for real!)- Oh man!  I swear I am super organized, but have totally struggled with this!  Something to focus the next 6 months on…saving up for a honeymoon!

Pass my test– Woo hoo!  All of that library time paid off.  I am know a Pediatric Clinical Specialist (PCS), which has me smiling from ear to ear!

Have a fun stress free wedding day– Yea, so some days are easy and some days my heart beats a little faster.  We’ve had more drama with planning than I would have liked (just found out the planner at the hotel we have been working with since October quit)…BUT, above all the marriage is the most important thing and the BOY and I are in this together!

Stay healthy– Other than those two weeks where I was REALLY sick, I have been feeling pretty energetic and healthy this  year. I’m hoping that continues through the end of the year.

IMG_20150516_141338436_HDR

BODY

Do a triathlonThe decision has been made that this won’t be a big racing year…so no triathlon.  And I am A-okay with that!  I am broadening my horizons a bit with exercise and doing tons of yoga!  This decision is helping me feel more balanced and less stressed, and we’ll just have to see what 2016 holds for races and tri’s.

Feel confident in a bikini- Work in progress!

Continue to build muscle strength– I think that my arms are definitely getting stronger and I am able to do 1-2 pull ups!  I’m hoping to continue to build my strength with the goal of adding in a consistent second strength day each week.

Keep my skin healthy– Success!  My focus on eating clean and drinking water, plus regular facials has paid off!

IMG_20150620_193708125_HDR

MIND

Be present– I have been soaking in every moment, big or small!  Case and point, feeling the wind in my hair as I drove the boat along the lake in the picture above.  I know that more excitement awaits around the corner, and I look forward to experiencing it all!

Teach more yoga/take yoga trainings- I think this may end up being more of a 2016 goal. I’d love to do a yoga retreat AND my adult yoga certification.  I was able to talk about kids yoga on a Podcast, which is something I never would have even dreamed of in January.  It’s fun to see where the year takes you…

Read good books– Check!  I started the year as a reading machine.  With work getting busier, I have been staying up later and reading less, but plan to devour a few more books from my ‘to read’ pile before the year is done.

Give back and volunteer- Ugh! Major Fail here!  I have been donating food, money, and clothes, but not as much of my time as I would like.

IMG_20150214_115254555_HDR

I know I say it every year, but this year has FLOWN by!  There have been some unexpected highs and a huge loss to our family as we said goodbye to our patriarch, Grandpa Al.  I know that there are more celebrations to come as we are less than 100 days from starting our life as husband and wife!  There is also a lot of non wedding excitement, vacations, and moments, and I am planning to breathe deep and appreciate all of the joy and gifts in the year ahead.   Stay tuned for June goals (and Tour de France updates) as this post is already way too long!

Thinking Out Loud Thursday {6/04}

I should admit that I don’t really understand what this title means, but I’ve seen other’s use it with randomness, so I thought I could give it a try.  Overall, this week is going really well!  We’ve survived hump day, the sun is shining, and there’s only one more sleep until the weekend!  Hooray Us!!!

IMAG0843

Yesterday was National Run Day!

blank-logo

I didn’t run Wednesday, but I did get in a good 5 miler Tuesday morning. If I were more tech savvy, I would add in all of the reasons that I run.

I RUN BECAUSE…

I can’t afford therapy

I love red wine

It’s my quiet time

I miss nature during my day job

I crave the HIGH’s

It’s where I do my best thinking

I rise to the challenge

It makes me feel strong

I never regret it

I burn off stress

I can!!!

Why do you run???

Cooper is sick

IMG_20150602_212530806

He has had a few asthma attacks over the weekend, which has been hard to see.  Afterwards, he usually ‘looses his meow’ and just sounds so pitiful.  This week, we started him on a medicine to help, and I am hoping that will get him through this challenging spring.  Even with the asthma, he still gets into everything…case and point…his new hiding location in our cup cabinet!

IMG_20150602_211427983

GREENS

IMG_20150531_130236099_HDR

I’ve been attacking my June goals and adding in the greens…spinach in my eggs, a veggie heavy curry, and zoodles galore!  My trainer encouraged me to cut back my dark chocolate habit to every other night. Ugh! I’ve been trying to squash the cravings with cake batter tea, but really nothing beats dark chocolate : )

IMG_20150603_192749243_HDR

I really wanted to buy these at Target!

IMG_20150603_184318691

Tell me…have you tried them???

Yoga

DSCN2071

I will just try to keep this stream of thought concise but basically…while I was teaching the spring Saturday yoga class, I was able to change my work schedule. Two mornings a week, I went to the 6am yoga class, which I LOVED.  I was doing yoga at least 3xweek, my body felt strong, and my mind clear.  Fast forward a month into my regular schedule, and I really miss morning yoga.  I considered trying to completely revamp my schedule, but that was a bust.  It occurred to me as I was walking out of Sunday’s yoga class that although I have never had a successful home practice, I might be able to use some of the podcasts I downloaded to do morning yoga on my own.  And…now that the weather is so beautiful in the mornings, perhaps I could even set up my mat in the backyard.  Which is exactly what I did after my walk with the BOY today before work!  And I’m hoping to do it again soon!

IMG_20150604_071728571_HDR

Weekender

Tomorrow, I am going downtown to hang out and drink wine with my sister in law…Hooray!  And then I may be back down in the city on Sunday and Monday!?  So fun!  Like I said…only one more sleep until the weekend!

What’s on your mind today?

What Do May Flowers Bring?

In some ways, May was a bit of a wash. I was sick for over two weeks and didn’t get my usual energy and zest back.  I didn’t do much exercise, cooking, or blogging and overall felt a little (not a lot, just a little) bit blah.

IMG_20150524_083003

But, in other ways, May was super fun and exciting!  I finished up a successful spring yoga session, I got out on my bike and then biked 30 miles on Lake Shore Drive, the BOY and I have been playing way more tennis, we did a weekend escape to Wisconsin, and on the last day of the month, we are scheduled to take our engagement pictures.

IMG_20140808_161933231

May is also an exciting month because it is clear that after the long, hard winter, summer is truly on it’s way. And with summer comes green veggies at farmer’s markets, outdoor BBQs, trips to Wisconsin and Michigan, and tons of fun and excitement!

IMG_20140705_121956

May Goals

Get into a tri training routine– Although I was initially stressed about the decision, I feel much better having decided not to do a tri this year.  I also appreciate everyone’s support and encouragement about the decision!

Eat whole foods (and lots of greens)-I have cleaned up my diet and will continue to work on this.  Unfortunately, when I don’t feel well, greens are the last thing on my mind.  I’m hoping to hit up more markets and incorporate more greens into each meal this next month.

Get outside…play tennis, go hiking!-We have played a lot more tennis.  The BOY is excited to get more active and we have enjoyed exercising together.

Keep up with my 10 minute daily mind break-Other than one or two times when my foot was its worst, I have been taking my walk breaks (even just 5 minutes in the parking lot when I have to).  It is my way to get in my Vitamin N(ature) and take a little mental break from my work day.

IMG_20150506_182457544

June Goals

Eat Clean, Train Dirtythis means whole foods, extra greens, lots of exercise, bike rides, and strength training.

Cook and Bake

Drink More Wateryou might be surprised to hear me say this because I drink a lot of water.  But I also drink a lot of black (caffeinated) tea and have not been drinking enough water during my work day, where it is tough sometimes to steal sips from my water bottle.

Slow Down and Enjoy Every Moment!

IMG_20150516_193559819_HDR

What are your June/Summer goals?

What I’ve Been Working On

I meant to have this post out earlier this week, but better late than never!

Checking In…

I’ve been working on a few things lately.  You know in the pursuit of becoming and better me and all  : )

Here is a taste of what’s been going through my mind this week…

10 Minute Work Breaks

I’ve initiated a 10 minute walk rule during my 4 long work days.  This means exactly what it sounds like.  Some time during the day, I make it a point to walk out the door into the sunshine for a 10 minute recharge walk. Sometimes I think about stuff I’ve been working on and other times I bring a friend to chat.  I’m wondering if it will catch on in my office.  If the weather disagrees with this plan, I’ve downloaded a bunch of 10 minute meditation podcasts.  Which brings us to the next point…

Meditation

Somewhere in the past few months, I’ve gotten more interested in this complex concept known as meditation.  Maybe it’s because I thought that it was challenging and cumbersome (especially for an energetic monkey mind like me).  But after a few experiences, I am discovering that there is no right way to meditate.  My thoughts can even join me as I sit.  And that there are countless benefits to a multitasking mover, much like myself.  So far… this just means that I have been exploring the idea with podcasts and books, attending a free meditation with my mom, and doing a 10 minute mindful meditation with my coworker one time.  I’d say I’m in the interested phase and interested to see where this all goes.

My Blog

I still like writing it…do people still read it?

Cooking

I’ve taken the easy route this spring and allowing the BOY to handle most dinner prep.  This is because he is home before me and LOVES to grill up tasty meats and delicious veggies.  Plus, our weekends have been so busy that I haven’t made time (between tennis and wedding stuff) to actually plan.  No problem…right?  Except that I miss my kitchen time, searching out new recipes and giving them a go.  So I am going to make an effort to cook and share more meals with you.  This week, it was an adaptation to everyone’s favorite Sloppy Joe’s.  See Recipe Below!

IMG_20150428_142252340_HDR

Eat Whole Foods

And WAY more greens and veggies.  Getting greens into every meal takes more effort and more prep and as my life has gotten busier, there has been a little bit less and then a little bit less.  I’d like to rely less on convenience foods and get back to eating just the whole foods that I enjoy and make my body feel good.

Getting Married

Balancing the wants and needs, families, and ideas.   Trying to keep up with all that needs to be done.  Getting hitched is like a full time job with a lot more emotion.  Right now, I am working on invites.

Prison

Random…right?  The BOY and I started Orange is the New Black which got us debating about who would survive the best in prison.  I’m an obvious front runner.

Goals and Running

New month…new goals!  I am getting back into my running routine, but it has been challenging to get in AM runs because the path near my house has been so empty.  In an attempt to be more safe, I bought runner’s mace.   I want to start increasing distance for my 10 miler at the end of May and a triathlon this summer.  So I am hoping that traffic on the path picks up as the weather is picking up.

April Goals

Begin tri training (including swimming)- I did get to a spin class, but I haven’t yet submerged myself in the pool.  I need to set my tri schedule all set this weekend!

Play tennis– Yay! We have been hitting the courts. So fun!

Cook healthy and delicious meals-I haven’t been doing this consistently but I do have a fabulous recipe for you below.

Spring Clean-We did a big spring cleaning and it felt great.

Create powerful and fun kids yoga classes-I’m having fun and I think the kids are too. I’ve had a few kids swing by to try the class and every one has decided to come back.  Only one more class this session, so I’ll have to make it memorable!

IMG_20150502_110336

May Goals

Get into a tri training routine

Eat whole foods (and lots of greens)

Get outside…play tennis, go hiking!

Keep up with my 10 minute daily mind break

Inhale the Future

It was well worth it to take the month of March off from goals.  My plate was full and my brain needed a bit of a break.  But now…I am looking ahead and excited to work towards improving my physical and emotional self!

What are your April goals?

The only way I can describe this past weekend is NON-STOP!

Saturday morning was the first day of spring yoga. I had 3 classes back to back.  It was so much fun to be back doing yoga with the kids!  We had some past participants and a few new kids.  Overall, it is an extraordinary group, which makes my job easy and exciting.

IMG_20150328_113944148

After yoga, I grabbed the BOY and I lunch at Jimmy John’s and had about 40 minutes to eat and change before going to the gym for a 3 hour self defense for runners seminar.  I run, mostly by myself, so I thought it would be important to have a few techniques up my sleeve.   I did learn some efficient ways to defend myself, but I also learned that I need to practice these skills.  When the seminar ended, I raced out the door to go home for a shower.  The BOY and I had #datenight plans with one of my friends and her husband.  The 4 of us downed some fantastic sushi and had a wonderful evening of laughter and catching up.

IMG_20150328_194035

We had one more stop after dinner to swing by and wish Happy Birthday to the BOY’s sisters boyfriend before coming home and playing Mario Brothers on the Wii.  The BOY was hungry (I have no idea how after all that sushi) and ordered pizza, which Cooper stalked like a pro.  Who doesn’t love that Papa John’s garlic butter sauce?  It reminds me of college!

IMG_20150328_230809024

Sunday morning I slept in and started the day with a long cuddle with an adorable kitty.  After that, it was off to brunch in the city, then downtown to check out bridesmaid dresses at BHLDN, and then post shopping tea with my mom, SIL, and a friend followed by a quick stop at Whole Foods on the way home.  This morning, I met my trainer for a serious training session and then some friends for lunch and shopping.  I picked up the CUTEST leggings at Lulu (on sale, of course)!  After shopping, I stopped by the BRAND NEW Trader Joe’s in town.  I am so excited to finally have one!

IMG_20150330_152230967

Since I didn’t end up making everything as planned last week, I moved a few recipes to this week, including the Baked Teriyaki Chicken from The Recipe Critic.

IMG_20150330_185519135_HDR

Served with roasted veggies.

IMG_20150330_185211503

And followed by a new Whole Foods chocolate find.

IMG_20150330_190925364_HDR

Like I said…it’s been non stop!

But all good things and I know that more good things lie ahead!  Did I mention we get to register this month?!

Hooray…it’s spring!

Meal Planning 3/30/15

Monday: Baked Teriyaki Chicken (See Recipe)

Tuesday: Pork and Veggies

Wednesday: Pasta/Zoodle Night (since it didn’t happen the last time we planned)

Thursday: TBD

Friday: Passover Night 1

Marching On

So hard to come up with a March title I haven’t used in the past.  No guarantee that this is one but I didn’t have the energy to look through the past few years of blogging.  So it’s March…in like a…what? Lion/Lamb?  Tough to tell from the library where I spent most of my weekend.

IMG_20150228_105037

Saturday started at Starbucks.  It took two tries to find one with a big table that was quiet enough for studying, but once I did, I was set for 3 hours of cramming.  Then I grabbed a sandwich and went home for a quick lunch with the guys.  I brewed up some iced tea and headed off to the library for another few hours of caffeinated information overload.

IMG_20150228_151436

The BOY and I had a fantastic Saturday night date night with new beers, chicken finger salad, and more binge watching the Blacklist.

I went to bed early so that I would be bright eyed for Sunday morning yoga.  I have not been doing much exercise lately…instead focused on sleep, work, and studying, so this yoga class was a huge highlight of my week!

Even more fun because I was there with my mom. We did a unique flow using all sides of our mat in a mandala. It was challenging, my muscles were sore, but I LOVED it.  Afterwards, my mom and I went to Whole Foods to stock up on goodies for the week ahead (and a few study snacks for the day).

I went back to the library for the majority of Sunday until it closed at 5pm, when I picked up the BOY to meet my parents out for dinner to celebrate my Dad’s birthday (it’s today).

We had a fantastic dinner with lots of laughter!  It was a wonderful way to start the month and celebrate my dad!

Needless to say, February was not the month I thought it would be.  Although I kept my goals in mind, they just weren’t top priority.  Spending time with my family and friends…appreciating the little moments and experiences…that is what I focused on!

February Goals

1. Continue to prioritize studying. CHECK!  It’s going pretty well!

2. Drink less soda. DOUBLE CHECK!  I’ve been brewing lots of iced tea.

3. Eat clean.  No Check!  Well…let’s just say I’ve been indulging in a few (but not all) of my cravings.

March Goals

After some thought, I’ve decided to take a break from goals this month. There is a lot going on and so I am going to just focus on getting through it all with a smile on my face : )  I’ll be back with spring goals next month!

Are you setting March Goals?  What’s up this month?
