Long Time…

Yeah, it has been!

I’ve got like a million excuses to share with you but the truth is that I have pink eye and haven’t been to work in the past 5 days!  Although pink eye is no joke (and no fun), it forced me to take a mini staycation.  Let me tell you…I woke up Wednesday morning with a swollen eye lid.  I’ll spare you the picture but let’s just say it was Quasimodo like : )  Thankfully, I got into the eye doctor quickly who confirmed my suspicion…pink eye, but he was undecided on viral vs bacterial (due to my recent cold).

‘What do you do?’ the eye doctor asks me after examining my eyes.

‘I’m a pediatric physical therapist’ I respond.

‘That’s a problem’ he says.  You’re telling me!

‘Oh and I teach yoga’ I add.

To which he asks me ‘Don’t you just do it all?’

‘Sometimes I feel like I can’ I say and he laughs!

So pink eye is highly contagious and it is frowned upon to pass along your contagious diseases to kids, so he tells me no work until Monday.  Ugh…he says he’ll write me a note.  Well, at that point, there’s not much you can do.  I get on my phone and begin canceling work, private yoga sessions, workshops, kids yoga classes, and a trip to the burbs to visit my niece.  Which basically gave me a 5 day staycation.

The good news is that I do own a pair of public-appropriate glasses and pink eye can only spread if I touch people.  So after throwing all our towels, pillow cases, and blankets into a hot washing machine, 24 hours later I headed into the world for a workout. I met my SIL at barre.  Afterwards, we grabbed coffee to enjoy during our pedicures.  Then we shared a huge tub of popcorn at Beauty &  The Beast before making a stop at the brand new and beautiful Whole Foods that just opened this week.

So many (cheese) possibilities…

Since my hubby was working a ton, I even had time to squeeze in a bubble bath!

I mean, if you have to take vacation time, you might as well enjoy it!!!  Friday and Saturday were a mix of catching up on my DVR, working out, March madness, yoga planning and coffee drinking!

So I really have no excuse for not blogging…But here I am now!

Other Updates…

-I am teaching 1-2 adult yoga classes a week and loving it. I’m not smooth with my wording but am working hard to create fun and unique classes that challenge my students.  Since my family is about 1/2 of the class, afterwards, they typically come over for midweek dinner, drinks, and laughter!

-I am also teaching kids yoga and have a few different age groups including the most adorable group of 2 year olds who every time they say Namaste, my heart smiles!

-Cooper is still Cooper, into everything, waking us up each day begging for breakfast, and napping in my arms. I actually think it is quite possible that he is involved in the pink eye situation as I fell asleep on his belly (even drooling on him) the night before I woke up with a swollen eye.

-I joined a volleyball team and play almost every Thursday night.  I’m also doing a lot of yoga and barre and actually went for an outdoor run last week which was fabulous!

-Last weekend, we went down to the St. Louis area for a visit with friends which was a BLAST!

-The BOY is getting sick…and you all know how men are when they are sick…Just keeping my fingers crossed he doesn’t get pink eye!!

-We are still meal planning!  Check out this week…

What have you been doing lately?

To Blog or Not to Blog?!

Ahh!  Isn’t that always the question!  Clearly, recently I have not been doing much blogging.  I also have not been doing much cooking or exercising but we can save that discussion for another day.

What have I been doing?  Well, you know, the usual ‘I just moved to a fun city after waiting 8 years’ kind of stuff like drinking wine with friends, going out on school nights, and working/networking!

When I started this blog, I had a lot of free time on my hands.  Ever since we moved in July, there seems to be less of this down time.  The BOY and I have spent a lot more time doing things together (even on week nights) and we have spent more time with our family and friends.  Blogging isn’t the only thing that has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle.  Other than sporting events, I watch WAY less TV (we are super behind on every show) and I haven’t spent full days in my kitchen whipping out snacks for an army.

I have been thinking about this shift and I believe there are a few things going on.  First of all, I am choosing to do different things with my down time than I did before.  This means less blogging/TV time and more reading and yoga planning.  In some ways, I look at this as non-attachment. I read somewhere in my yoga books over the summer about the importance of non attachment. I didn’t understand it at the time, but after living 2 months with all of my ‘stuff’ (okay, most of it, Mom…not all of it) in storage, I became less ‘attached’ to things that I once thought I needed.  TV falls into this category as does all of the boxes of my belongings that I donated after our move.  I think that this is a good thing.  It means that I am a little less stressed when I miss an episode (or season) of my favorite shows and just make/cook something without any pictures or stories to share on the blog.  It also means that I went through and cut way back on the blogs that I follow.  I also decluttered my inbox by unsubscribing to the majority of mass emails I get and renewed less magazines.  Do I miss blogging and a few great shows? YES!  But am I happy?  Definitely!

Unfortunately, the non attachment has not carried over to wine or chocolate.  Which leads me to my second point.  When something is new, it feels way more fun, and that makes it tough to miss out on.  The BOY and I are both working a bunch of hours so when we aren’t working, we are always excited to explore our new neighborhood.  We have had tons of city plans, a trip to Door County, and hometown sports rolling in.  I anticipate as the newness of living in the city wears off and the reality of Chicago winters arrives that I will find myself with more down time and the desire to reconnect with my blogging.  I guess we will just have to see.

So what does this mean for the blog?  I dunno yet!  My plan is to continue to share my adventures, recipes, and pictures of my cute Cooper but for now at a less frequent pace.  We’ll just have to take it one day at a time.  Right now I want to make sure that I have the energy to get acclimated to my new jobs, keep up with my weekly yoga classes, connect with my husband and kitten, host friends for chili (like we did this past weekend), and FINALLY bike to work!

What big changes are coming your way this fall?

Bloggers, do you have ups and downs?

OMG! Worst Blogger Ever Award!

Friends…old and new! How are you???  Where has the time gone???

I swear it was like yesterday that I was blogging up a storm and then I took a quick break to move in with my P’s, start a new job, get my yoga certificate, enjoy summer, then move again (this time to Chicago), start another new job, unpack…and…Yeah…I’m still not unpacked…and yeah, I seem to still be on a break.  But anyways, the point is it is mid September and I haven’t blogged in a month.  Which earns me the Worst Blogger Ever Award!

So just a quick update…the BOY, Cooper, and I moved into the city Labor Day Weekend and we haven’t slowed down since.

With help, we have been unpacking a million boxes (with many more to go)…

I started another new job, cut off all of my hair again, and haven’t cooked a thing.

Which might be why you haven’t heard from me.  I am working two part time jobs, learning the ropes, teaching a ton of yoga classes (last week, I taught 4 kids classes), exploring the city by bike, drinking wine, buying new furniture, and eating all of the Thai food my tummy can handle,

Check me out…I’m a bike commuter!

I bought a bubbie cart so I can walk to the HUGE Mariano’s down the block.

Which is what I did this afternoon.  Have I mentioned that I live across the street from a yoga studio?!  It is right in between a coffee shop and wine bar and it makes me happy every time I look out the window.

So this morning, I went to the most amazing yoga class, then came home to organize our bathroom.  Cooper had an afternoon vet appointment, which was very traumatic for both of us.  He wouldn’t go into his crate so we were super late.  When we got home, he ran and hid under the bed, so I took my bubbie cart to the grocery store.

I’m sure you guys missed me but I am guessing that you missed Cooper more so I threw in a few of his pics.  After a busy week, I was happy to make dinner and decided on this Island Pork Tenderloin.  I came back from the grocery store and got started on dessert first.  As I was pulling out all of the ingredients, I realized that I didn’t have sugar.  Luckily, the BOY passes the store on his walk home from the train so he swung by and picked up sugar.

Just some Friday night baking essentials.  My dessert came together easily except I couldn’t find sprinkles anywhere in our house. I tried all of my many kitchen cabinets and drawers (my new kitchen also makes me happy!) but there were no sprinkles.  I gave up and subbed in white chocolate chips for the sprinkles and threw some in the middle and on top.

Apparently I am also the worst baker ever…ha ha!  Although I thought I had everything timed out, it appears our oven is not so strong so everything took WAY TOO LONG!  That being said, the bars still turned out phenomenal and were devoured by the BOY and I after dinner.

I just couldn’t decide if I like the crunchy sugary ends or the ooey gooey middle better!

I kept the recipe as written below but know that this is a very forgiving dessert so you can probably whip it together with whatever you have in your pantry!  Even if you haven’t even unpacked all your pantry boxes : )

I have no idea what my blogging future holds but hoping to check in with ya’ll more often!

What’d I miss with you guys???

Cake Batter Sugar Cookie Bars

From Today’s Creative Life

  • 1 cup of white chocolate chips
  • 6 tablespoons softened butter
  • ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • Dash of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1¼ cup of gluten free flour or regular flour
  • ¼ cup of Nonpareil or sprinkles to mix in
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of Nonpareil or sprinkles for the top of the batter before baking

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Grease an 8" x 8" baking pan and set aside.
  3. Carefully melt white chocolate chips at 50% power in microwave, stirring often to make sure they don’t burn. Once they are just about melted, stir in softened butter and remaining ingredients (except sprinkles) which you will want to fold in gently at the very end. Spread dough into pan and cover the top of the dough with the remaining sprinkles.
  4. Bake for about 22 minutes or until the bars begin to turn golden around the edges of the pan.
  5. The bars will be a bit gooey when you remove them from the oven, they will continue to set as they cool for 30 minutes to an hour.
  6. Enjoy!!!

Unplanned Unplug

I’m back again…

I swear I didn’t plan to be gone from the blogging world for that long, it just sort of happened.  No I haven’t been reading blogs either so there is much to catch up on!  I’ve just been slammed on so many fronts and at the end of the day just didn’t have the time or energy to talk about it.  Enter in a scheduled ‘down’ weekend.  Well if you can call cramming errands into your Friday night and a workout, teaching a kids yoga class, and a facial into your Saturday all before 2pm ‘down’ time?!

Anyways, in case you’ve missed me, here’s what I’ve been up to…

Nashville was wonderful, catching up with my girls, eating amazing food, and listening to fresh, live music!

Bonuts from Biscuit Love…Mmm!

Devouring chocolate fondue with my amazing coworkers at All Chocolate Kitchen!

An Award…For Me?

A huge THANK YOU to my fellow Chicago blogger Sara at Lake Shore Runner for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger award. I feel like my blogging has been a little bit more blah lately and was pleasantly surprised to see my name on her list of nominees.  I even double checked it to make sure that I hadn’t misread it.  I love a survey and awards…they always bring a little zeal to the blog!

So what is this wonderful award?

The Versatile Blogger Award is for those blogs that bring something special to your life.  In picking your nominees, you are to consider the quality of the writing, the uniqueness of the subjects covered, the level of love displayed in the words on the virtual page. Or, of course, the quality of the photographs and the level of love displayed in the taking of them.

Who me?

Why, Thank You!  The rules are that I answer Sara’s 10 questions and then nominate 10 other bloggers with a new set of questions.  Easy enough…right?  And something to start thinking about in between Blackhawks periods Monday night, when I probably should have been getting ready for bed, and finish tonight when I should have been doing paperwork but instead decided to drink some wine.

And here we go…

1. What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Hmm…this one was really tough because I feel I’m pretty real and upfront about me.  But, most people who know me are surprised to learn that I was super shy as a kid.  Like seriously afraid to arrive to a group party, clung to my mom, kind of shy (Mom, feel free to add something).  How I got over it…no idea!  I went to kindergarten and haven’t stopped talking since.

2. Have you ever met someone famous?

I don’t think so…I did see Joakim Noah from the Bulls at LaGuardia last year, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually met someone famous.

3. What’s something you hope will never come back in style?

Perms and feathered bangs…need I saw more?!

4. What is one place on your travel must-see bucket list?

There are so many to choose from!  I’d love to sun bathe in the Polynesian Islands and eat my way through Europe (I’m thinking Greece and Italy).  Plus, I dream of following the Tour De France through France one year and doing yoga in Bali.  So the answer is…all of the above!  I have been to a few bucket list places.  I was so lucky to visit Israel a few years back and travel Australia with my brother.

Bondi Beach

5. Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Emma Stone…plus I think we’d totally be friends IRL.  (No I don’t think we look alike, but we are both super awesome and cool!)

6. Who is your favorite Disney Princess?

Funny because I actually answer this question more often then most professionals my age.  The joys of working with kids, singing Frozen songs at work, and having to be totally up to date on EVERYTHING Disney.  My number one favorite is Cinderella.  My aunt had cable and used to record movies and mail them to us from New York.  I remember that Cinderella was on a tape with a few other movies and it was by far my favorite.

7. What would you sing at karaoke night?

You would be very unlucky to find yourself at a bar where I was singing karaoke.  It would most likely mean that I had been over-served and need to go home. Because…I am tone deaf and a terrible singer!  I was in choir in junior high and they told me I could stay in choir but I just couldn’t sing.  That being said, I ironically sing almost daily at my job.  I do a mean rendition of ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ and always love ‘Old MacDonald’ with the animal sounds.

IMG_1000 IMG_0999

So if you made me sing karaoke and I couldn’t go to my favorite childhood work songs, it would most likely be ‘I will Survive’ or Paramore’s ‘Misery Business’.  And when I’m done, please call me a cab!

8. Who would you want to be stranded with on a deserted island?

As cheesy as it sounds, it’s totally my fiancé.  The two of us always have a BLAST together, whether we are exploring San Francisco or playing games during a Wisconsin Staycation.  I know that he will always make me laugh and that we’d be able to make coconut water out of coconuts.  It’d be okay if Cooper came too!

9. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Bad drivers!!!  Ugh, I hate getting stuck behind a slow person in the left lane.  My heart starts racing just thinking about it!

10. What clothing item/accessory/shoes do you have way too many of in your closet?

Your Turn!

Just Fuffy

Babeta Runs

Well Plated by Erin

I had a Big Lunch

Triathlete Treats

Sweet Sweat Life

Running with the Sunrise

Bendiful Blog

Blissful Britt

The Healthy Maven

Do You Miss the Colors?

I hadn’t planned on changing my blog background or even blogging at all tonight, but I have been looking for a blog theme with a crisp, white, background for awhile.  So when I found one…I just hit SAVE and decided to figure out the details later.

My thought was that this would help my pictures pop and after 3+ years with the same blog theme, it was definitely time for a change!

Bloggers, how often do you change your theme?

I’ve got more wedding pics and family fun coming your way!  But right now, I’m still recovering from the 4 day wedding weekend event : )

What Do You Do?

In all seriousness, what will I blog about when there are beautiful blue skies and no weather to complain about?!

Luckily my ticket to Florida to celebrate the birthday of #Grandpa Al in April just got booked, so we will find out : )

Onto another serious matter…Dinner!

Food Bloggers-What do you do when you make a great recipe but don’t get a good picture of it?!  Last night’s meal was Crockpot Chicken Pesto from my 150 Healthiest Crockpot Recipes Book (seriously everything I make from here is golden!).  Tuesday morning, I chopped the shallots.  Tuesday afternoon, the BOY did the rest.  Note: this was an easy recipe that I might have done ahead of time but we didn’t have room in our fridge for the full crockpot and I didn’t want chicken sitting out all day.  End Note: I really didn’t think it was necessary to take a picture of the shallots.

Tuesday was a longer day than expected and I came back, just drained!  I walked in at 9pm not even sure if I was going to eat dinner, but the sweet smell of pesto did me in.  I took a small bowl of the chicken and mushroom mix and ate it standing while I unpacked my bag, debated doing some work, and changed into my PJ’s.  I then proceeded to clean up the kitchen putting dinner in a tuperware in the fridge.  It didn’t even occur to me to take a photo and I certainly didn’t have the energy to stage it as a real meal (like with veggies and some rice).

But, this dinner was fantastic, so I’d hate for ya’ll to miss out, but a blog post without pictures?  That is so not me!

Insert random picture of car covered in snow this morning…

And so I have decided to share the link because this recipe is worth checking out and then post about this recipe in full the next time the BOY cooks with the crockpot : )  No, I will make it way before then!

As a consolation, I do have an updated photo from yesterday’s chili to show you, and I can tell you that it is filling and fantastic!  And totally worth making for one last pre spring crockpot recipe!

Ok, so what do you do when blog posts don’t go according to plan?

{2013} How did it Go?

It seems like a lifetime ago that I sat down to write this 2013 Bucket List.  In fact, it was just one year ago, but in some ways, each year feels like it’s own life time.  So many things get packed into each of the 365 days that there is so much to think about and mull over come the end of December.  In truth, it’s been the second half of the year that has whizzed by.  It seems like yesterday I just got back from Israel with the rest of the summer ahead of me.  And wrote my half way Bucket List post.  Fast forward 6 months and here we are at years end.

Overall, this has been an outstanding year for me.  I’ve made some changes in my professional life that have dramatically decreased my stress levels, turning me back into the woman I like and respect.  I started a new job full time at the start of December and I look forward to continuing to grow in that position in the new year.

In the racing world, it’s been the year of the PR.  I finally PRed a half marathon, breaking the 1:50 mark.  I ran an incredibly fast (for me) 8k Shamrock Shuffle and finished out racing season with an exciting finish to the Chicago Marathon, blowing away my expectations and leaving me with a sense of pride for my physical accomplishment and sense of commitment to the children of St. Jude.

On the healthy living front, it’s been fun pulling the BOY into meal planning and cooking up some healthy week night dinners each week.  I’ve moved beyond some bad habits and picked up some new better ones.  Although I am not in my skinny jeans just yet, I see myself slipping into them in the near future.

It has been truly fulfilling adding Cooper into our family, and the BOY and I continue to enjoy each day and every new adventure that comes our way.  Although it may not seem like anything huge has happened this year, I think that is what makes it so outstanding…just appreciating all of the little moments and gifts in 2013.

This is my first year doing a bucket list, and I think that it is a great way to capture all of the little moments that make up a big year.

2013 Bucket List

Restore Balance

Eat Clean

I don’t know why this continues to be so tough for me.  I cooked up a lot of clean meals this year, but still hang on to a bit of a snacking tooth.

Practice Yoga More Consistently

I practiced outside of the mat is Israel and had a strong finish to the year getting to yoga twice a week for the last few weeks.  Yoga continues to be a beautiful journey for me and next year, I am hoping to be able to combine my passion for yoga with work.

Keep Meal Planning

Looking for meal planning ideas, you can find a lot of planned out weeks throughout the past year.

Create/Join a Book Club (and read more!)

This area was a bit of fail as I am still working on the same book from a few months ago.

Improve Fitness

Half Marathon PR

I had a speedy start to the year with a 1:49:46 half marathon PR

Another Olympic Tri

Sadly I wasn’t able to fit one in this year, but I did do one sprint distance race

Chicago Marathon (Sub 4:00 please)

Yea!  I am so excited to call myself a sub 4 marathoner!

Do a Century Bike Ride

Like mentioned above, I just couldn’t fit everything into this racing year

Make a Change

Well, I still blog so that has to count for something : )

I volunteered for St. Jude for 3 different events this year!  Sooo fun!

Take a Professional Risk

I’m so grateful that with the support of my family and the BOY, I made some professional changes, quitting my job of 5 years and starting a new one.

Did you reach you 2013 goals?

What are you hoping to accomplish in 2014?

Five For Friday X

1. September is National Breakfast Month!

Hooray for Breakfast!  You can see my full list of blog breakfasts on my Breakfast Page!

2. We were promised fall like weather and this morning, it arrived.  It’s amazing how much better I run in cool weather.  I finished his mornings 8 miles just under race pace without evening pushing for it.

3. I finally caught up on 4 episodes (read 8 hours…thanks goodness for the fast forward button) on So You think You Can Dance this week.  I’m a huge fan of Fik-Shun and his incredible journey!  Amy has been my favorite girl from the start, and I was thrilled to see the two of them win.  Counting down for season 11!

4. Nutrition Update:

As mentioned in the beginning of the month, September is supposed to be all about nutrition.  Some things have gone very well, while others involved more chocolate.  This week has lacked in the cooking and homemade healthy dinners, but I’m making two pledges for the weeks ahead.

1. There will be recipes on the blog next week.

2. I will not be eating candy corn until Halloween.

On that note, I passed on the candy corn at work this week, but ate crunchy M&M’s instead…oops! : )

5.  To end on a funny note, this week the BOY and I discovered that Cooper can climb to the top of our screen door.

Never a dull moment!

Tell me something about your week!
