I casually mentioned this to my mom last weekend, who made the funniest face and said ‘How?’ before I realized what I had actually said. What I meant was that I had picked up the book Wild at the library, and 2 chapters in, I was a big fan! Yesterday, the BOY and I were back at the library with huge cokes in hand, snacks packed, and laptops buzzing. We spent about 4 hours there which seems to be enough sitting and studying time for me : )
It is helpful to have the BOY right in the heart of his last set of finals because it motivates me to hit the books too. Although he will be done with finals in one week, and I have 2 months until test time, so soon I may have to go it alone. I have high hopes of bribing him with cokes and snacks to the library on future weekends, but we shall see how that goes.
I’ve read some incredible books this year and Wild seems like the perfect way to round out a year full of alluring and intriguing (mostly female) characters. I’ve only started one book that I just didn’t get into fast enough to finish and everything else has been thought provoking, strong reads. I may have even read more books this year, but here is what I remember (aka my favorites) from 2014.
2014 Reading List
Past Imperfect by Julian Fellowes
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Sharp Objects* by Gillian Flynn
(*Dare I say that I liked this better than Gone Girl…it’s by the same author)
Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Where She Went by Gayle Forman
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Wild by Cheryl Strayed
I have two book shelves overflowing with books along with a ‘to read next’ pile on my night stand that seems to grow with every amazon purchase I make. Looking forward to getting lost in more amazing true and fictional stories next year!
What was your favorite book of the year?
I’m reading a book right now called Paper Love-searching for the girl my grandfather left behind by Sarah Wildman. It’s really good. I also liked Small Steps the year I got polio by Peg Kehret.
How interesting! I will have those to my amazon WISH list! It’s where I store all of my ‘want to read’ list because I can never keep it straight : )
Good reads!! I put Sharp Objects and Wild on my hold list at the library so we will see how long it takes to get those! I am in the middle of reading the Night Owl Trilogy. It is good different than expected!!
I’ve never heard of it! You’ll have to tell me what you think of Sharp Objects…it is dark, twisty, and I LOVED it!
You wild woman, you. HA.
LOL! Have you read it? It makes me want to go hiking every night!
Wild is one of my favorite reads! Can’t wait to see the movie! Two of my favorite recent reads are Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat… excellent! Currently reading The Champion’s Mind, which is great!
My patient was just telling me about Unbroken. So many good books to read before the movies come out!!! I will have to check out The Champion’s Mind!
Haha I’ll admit I was intrigued as to how you got Wild at the library too! I’ve heard such good things about Sharp Objects — I’ll definitely have to add that to my reading list!
Yes…it is AMAZING! And I think coming out in a made for TV movie too!
Thanks for your list! I love to read and think I’ll be doing a lot more of it in the next couple months as my working out starts to dwindle.
I’ve read too many books this year to remember, but my favourite recent read was The Pearl That Broke Its Shell. It’s one of those that goes between connected stories- loved it.
Oh I love that kind too. Reconstructing Amelia was a bit like that! I just added it to my list. I wish I had more time to read…I do a good job of reading mags too and I love Runners World, Yoga Journal, and anything cooking : )

[…] Unplug Consistently-I have consciously blogged less this year. Choosing sometimes to participate in life instead of documenting it. I think that has allowed me to find better balance in my day to day life and dive into some amazing books this year. […]
