Weekend Update

The big talk of the weekend is the weather!  Is this true by you too?  Mostly, the extremely cold temperatures approaching on Monday (and in our case, possibly some snow first).  It’s been hard to tell what is really going to happen with the weather because each news source has a different story and the truth is, we just won’t know until Monday gets here.  However, there is already talk of cancelling schools.

Our Backyard!

I was in bed early last night and looking forward to a good night’s sleep.  But that didn’t happen.  The BOY has been sick with a cold since New Years and it took a turn for worse last night. He was up most of the night coughing.  In hope of a better night’s sleep for me tonight (and for his health), I had him at immediate care this morning minutes after they opened.

The BOY has a sinus infection and possibly double ear infections (although nobody thinks this is possible as we’re supposed to stop getting ear infections at age 9), so we went straight to the grocery store to pick up his prescriptions.  With all of the talk about weather, we decided to stock up on groceries for the weekend ahead, pulling together an easy meal plan.  I can’t tell you the last time I was at the grocery store on a Saturday morning before 10am!

We got the BOY back home, medicated, fed, and settled in his chair. And then I threw an easy turkey chili into the crockpot.  The only thing I had scheduled for today was an orthodontist appointment. I was able to bump it up earlier and since I was heading out, stopped by the indoor track for a run.  I’ve been pretty inactive this past week and was looking forward to catching up on some workouts this weekend.  I wasn’t about to let our adventurous morning in health care get in the way of that.  I ran for 40 minutes and after a week off, I felt great!  I was really energized and happy that I took the time to go to the gym!

I couldn’t choose just one sleeping Coop picture…he’s just too cute!

When I came back home around 1:30pm, I knew I was in for the rest of the day.  The BOY was snoring by 3:30pm (with Cooper in tow) and I found Adventures in Babysitting on cable.  With the cold weather has come the return of hot lemon water which I have been sipping on ALL day!  Dinner tonight was chili, which turned out fantastic…especially for how easy and pain free it was to make.

Now we are all tucked in to watch possibly my 10th movie in the past week, Monster University.  Perhaps we are tucked in for the next two days or maybe just the night, but either way, we will be prepared!

What’s on your weekend update?

Easy Crockpot Turkey Chili

1.25 lbs ground turkey (I like 93/7)

1 onion, chopped

1 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes with basil and garlic

1 8 oz can of chopped green chilies

1 14 oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained

1 14oz can of hominy, rinsed and drained

2 tbsp chili powder

2 cloves of garlic, chopped (or 2 tsp of the pre minced kind)

Spray pan with cooking spray and brown meat over medium high heat, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.

Spray crockpot with cooking spray.  Place meat on the bottom of the crockpot and layer the rest of the ingredients on top.  Stir well and set on low heat for 8-10 hours until flavors are blended and beans soft.

Top with your favorite toppings!

  1. Wow! Looks like you already have a lot of snow. I can sympathize with the boy. I have had the flu since Tuesday. Hopefully he got some good cough syrup like I have. It helps with sleeping tremendously!! All anyone can talk about here is the big snow event heading our way. All of our local stores are out of milk!! We aren’t use to large amounts of snow like we might see tomorrow so people are freaking out. We are well prepared with groceries and plan to stay in and watch the snow fall. Stay safe!

    • That is our plan for today too but I am starting to go a little stir crazy! I”m not used to being home this many days in a row. We are stocked up with groceries too so no need to leave. My parents made the BOY some soup but can’t get it to us because the highways are soo bad. I hope that you are feeling better and resting up!

  2. We’ve got a lot of snow right now. Hope the Boy feels better- runnerbydefault must have had my “knock you out” cough medicine-I don’t think I coughed all night but I was asleep or at least unconscious!
Cooper looks so sweet when he sleeps (Dogma does too and it almost makes me forget that he chewed up the strap on one of my new shoes yesterday).

I am making a large pot of soup today after work and probably a meatloaf and roasted potatoes although I am hoping for no school tomorrow-that would be awesome!

    • It’s sounding good for cancelled schools but who knows. They do look sweet when they sleep which makes me forget that he woke me up at 4am by jumping on my head. I don’t think we have that cough stuff because there was still some coughing last night but he is feeling a little better. Stay warm today! I’d much rather be at yoga than stuck indoors but I’m sure I”ll find something to keep me busy!

  3. Lovely relaxing weekend! Friday I had a girls night, Sat was laundry / gym / mid afternoon nap / bed by 10… and now I am prepping to head out on a 20 mile run and then go to brunch! I am back at work tomorrow for the first time since Dec 20th… MERRR

    • That is always a tough transition. I am jealous of your run! I don’t think I will be leaving the house today and I’d much rather be running! HAve fun! Can’t wait to read about it!

  4. Isn’t this weather ridiculous?! It’s currently -10 here, and the governor canceled all schools tomorrow because it’s supposed to be so cold (wind chills of -50 and colder!). Stay warm, and I hope the boy feels better! Chili is the perfect food for weather like this 🙂

    • Agreed! Tonight we’ve got some shredded chicken for a baked potato bar, so we are eating well! He is getting better but still pretty down. My dad’s work was already cancelled tomorrow and our first day of tennis lessons. We’ll se what happens!

  5. Yikes- the Boy’s ailments don’t sound like fun. Hope he feels better ASAP and that you don’t get sick.
I LOVE Adventures in Babysitting and seriously know almost the entire movie by heart 🙂

    • I haven’t seen it in forever and was amazed by how much I knew. It really is a keeper and I couldn’t believe how much Chicago has changed since then. He is getting better day by day but still not there. So far, I am healthy and hoping that someone I can stay healthy!

  6. Adventures in Babysitting is awesome! One of my favorites! I am so sorry about the weather! It is cold here and there was a little ice on the ground today but nothing like you guys! Crazy!! I hope you don’t get sick and the BOY feels better soon! Its too bad you can flee from the house! 😦
I just been hanging this weekend. A couple work outs. Reading. My friend had twins last week so I have been over there helping out!

    • Oh that sounds like so much fun!!! I’m sure she appreciates the extra hands. It has been good to lay low, but we’re not sleeping great because the BOY is coughing through the night. Luckily, I am staying healthy, so far so fingrs crossed it continues!
