Happy Groundhog Day!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t care one bit if the groundhog saw his shadow today as long as the winter weather stays like this!

It is amazing to think just one year ago, I was snowed in at my parent’s house for Snowmageddon 2011.

And that one year ago yesterday, I signed up for the Chicago Marathon.  Does every marathoner have one of these ‘I look horrible after I just ran 26.2 miles” photo that they are super proud of???

A few people have asked me if I will be running another marathon this year.  Although I absolutely LOVED my experience, it was physically and emotional draining.  Since I have some professional commitments this year, I knew that training for anything that big would be more stressful than enjoyable (which is what it is supposed to be), so instead I am focusing on some smaller races and hoping to cheer on everyone who signed up yesterday as they take on downtown Chicago in October.  I have a feeling that I will miss it and be back to long distance training sooner rather than later!

Groundhog Day is not traditionally about looking backwards, but instead figuring out the future.  Unlike Phil (or our local groundhog hero Woodstock Willie), I am not prepared to predict 6 weeks ahead, but it does make the timing right for today’s post to be about my February goals.  When we last left off, it was the start of the year and I was working on my Why Not? List which holds my intentions for the year.  My main January goals were to maintain my healthy lifestyle while on vacation, get back into my winter workout routine, update the blog, and decrease my meat and dairy consumption.

Well, I think it is possible that I just went on my healthiest vacation yet.  I exercised almost every day and stayed in tune with my hunger cues.  I got plenty of rest (hooray daily naps!) and caught up on some reading.  I enjoyed wine and treats and wore plenty of sunscreen.  I returned home feeling refreshed and excited to share my healthy cruising tips and pictures with you!

After returning from vacation, I got right back into exercise.  I have been getting up early for the gym and brought the jump rope back out.  I have been strength training at least 2xweek and getting in Hot Yoga almost every week.  I also just signed up for my first race of the year…a half marathon on May 6th, so my trail shoes have been getting plenty of use on outdoor runs.  I even tried my first CrossFit class!

As for the blog update, welcome purple background.  If you are interested in the details, you can read all about my blog struggles HERE and the weekend of my life that I can never get back HERE.  My head hurts just thinking about it!  As for a much more exciting topic (recipes!!!), I have been enjoying my mostly meat and dairy free eating.  I have had a few baked goods and treats that contain butter or milk, but I haven’t had any meat or poultry.  I plan to continue to eat meat like a treat and enjoy more of these fabulous vegetarian meals that I have been whipping up!

February Goals:

-Add more greens (kale, collards, chard) into my and the BOY’s diet

-Get in the pool and swim!

-Put together a training plan for a half marathon and triathlon

-Add weekly exercise post to blog

-Continue to make delicious and healthy meat and dairy free meals each week

How are you feeling today?

Thinking forwards or looking behind you?  Or a little bit of both like me?

  1. well, I do like this weather better…

after hearing about wheat free, and reading an interview, I have been wheat free for a week, well mostly… as with vegetarian, I sometimes ‘forget’!

and… total absence of sugar cravings.. the book wheat belly says wheat has been so genetically altered and chemical added that INCREASES APPETITE that is is no long really even a food.

I am not so good at goal setting, especially during tax season… however .. my goal is to become even wheat free er and begin to explore nut flours..

also, to continue strength training and give serious consideration to my own personal activity goal for 2012. both the bike the drive and soldier field 10 miler, on the SAME WEEKEND… forget the pool, I hate swimming…

    ok, on we go!!
