Good Afternoon!

IMAG2351

It’s been an odd start to the week as I have to go in to work for a few hours this afternoon/evening.  Then tomorrow, I have the morning off before spending my afternoon as a teaching assistant.  After a few weekends of work/travel, I was looking forward to getting back into my meal planning groove.  However, between my schedule change, the BOY’s late night finals, and a sushi date with my girl friends on Thursday, there’s not much planning to do.

IMAG2350

I did finally make it to the grocery store this morning in order to restock our house with food…specifically fresh fruits and veggies!  We were in a sad state as evidenced above by the lone garlic.

IMAG2380

With the start of May, I am excited to detox my diet.  I mentioned this in my May goals, but didn’t have the energy to elaborate.  My plan is to return to a cleaner way of eating that includes no processed foods and tons of fresh produce.  I know that spring weather, farmer’s markets, and the BOY’s love of BBQing make this a much easier task.  I also know that I have exciting races and a fun trip abroad (details coming soon) planned where I will want to look and feel my best.  Now, that’s what I call motivation!

IMAG2376

I kicked off the week with a colorful salad with tuna.  I picked up some fish for dinner tomorrow night and decided on simple and easy to prep turkey tacos for dinner on Wednesday.  That’s about as far as I got with this week’s meal plans.  I know the BOY is excited to work through his last few finals so that he can get back to the grill and his new smoker.

This morning I treated my tired body to a much needed day off.  After yesterday’s PR, it deserved some rest, but I am looking forward to getting back into my tri training groove later in the week.  My official race results from yesterday were posted, and I was spot on with my own self timing…

30-34 Female Jennifer 1:49:46.54 Streamwood, IL

What’s fun is that I placed 11/40 in my age and division and 205/850 in the entire race!  Combined with a PR, I am proud of my early season effort!

Quick question for ya’ll before I head off to work…I am looking for some healthy and easy to prepare ideas for lunch…maybe even salads that can be made ahead.

Any suggestions?  Please post your links!!

Just checking in today because it’s MAY!

IMAG2339

It’s aMAYzing what a few days of sunshine can do for the soul!  It started with 4 glorious days in Florida and continued with two gorgeous days back home.  The sun is out, the windows are open, and almost overnight the grass has turned a bright green color.

IMAG2338

It feels fantastic!

With a weekend of travel, I don’t have much to share in regards to recipes and I’m tapering before this weekend’s half marathon, so my workouts have been a bit dull (although I did run by the beach and swim some laps in Florida).

IMAG2335

Because it is May 1st, it’s time to check in on my goals although I don’t have too much insight or perspective after working another 12 hour day.  The best part of the month was without a doubt celebrating my grandfather’s 101st birthday.  And I know that with spring finally in the air, it’s going to be a GOOD month of May!

April Goals

IRONMAN March/April

-I haven’t counted out the miles, but I know I met my swim goal and went way over on my running.  I cycled at least 100 miles (mostly indoors), but was able to get outside for one bike ride.  This was a really fun goal and I hope to find more unique goals like it!

Find (and then use) my heart rate monitor

-Found it!  Now I just have to change the battery and bring it along on a workout.

Set up my Tri/Running schedule

-Done!  Training is going well, and I am looking forward to May’s half marathon and June’s sprint triathlon.

Feel comfy sporting my bathing suit in Florida

-Well…there’s definitely room for improvement in this area.

Figure out what to do with my Google Reader List (I’d be lost without it!)

-I’m signed up on BlogLovin’…any tips???

May Goals

-Use my heart rate monitor

-Beat last year’s Soldier Field 10 miler time

-Detox the diet

-Update my recipe page

***Edited to add…write summer bucket list!

What are you looking forward to this May???

Out Like a Lamb March 31, 2013

This title seemed only fitting after my initial March post titled In Like a Lion.  Thankfully, after a few snow storms and quite a chilly month, March did come to an end more like a lamb than a lion.  With 50 degree weather this weekend, the BOY and I have been able to walk along the path out back and clean off the grill.  And since today is Easter, we have a nice relaxing day planned!

IMAG1984

I got a rejuvenating 9+ hours of sleep last night and woke up right before 8am without an alarm.  I made a filling breakfast omelet before going to a 10am yoga class.  I was super excited to see that my yoga studio was open today and happy to leave the house while the BOY got busy with his meat smoker (see previous post for fully explanation).  This morning’s class was tough yet revitalizing.  I don’t think I have sweat that much in months!  At the end of our relaxation, I would have been happy to stay on my mat soaking in the good vibes and peace throughout the room.  When I left the studio, the sun was shining and for the first time, it smelled like spring!

The BOY and I spent the day at home hanging out and enjoying some much needed down time!  I finally had time to upload music to my new computer (I desperately need to update my ipod) and set up my training schedule for spring.

IMAG1976

For dinner, we made a full chicken on the grill.  Ok, I just said we, but the only thing that I did to help was find the spices in our spice cabinet.  The BOY did all of the work and was quite proud of himself!

IMAG1987 IMAG1990

Rightfully so…it was a pretty awesome dinner!

IMAG1997

As the month comes to an end today, here are a few accomplishments worth mentioning…I increased my activity level, adding some speed intervals and took care of myself with a massage.  The BOY and I created some successful meal plans and hosted a dinner party.  There was a ton of basketball thrown into the mix too!  I got to the pool twice and made some decent headway towards IRONMAN March.

IRONMAN March Update

Swim

1.25 miles out of 2.4 miles

Bike

23 miles out of 112 miles

Run

34 out of 26.2 miles

March Goals

Try some new classes

-I finally made it to a spin class!

IRONMAN March

-This is such a fun goal!  I finished the run portion,, but have a long way to go on the biking and swimming, so I am making this the IRONMAN March/April goal.

No added sugar

-I seem to have forgotten about this goal.  Oops!  My eating has been about the same and I still have some changes to make to feel comfortable in my tri suit this spring.

Unplug more often

-Although I posted quite a bit this month, I did take time to unplug from reading and writing, which I think has helped me de-stress, especially during the workweek.

April goals

-IRONMAN March/April

-Find (and then use) my heart rate monitor

-Set up my Tri/Running schedule

-Feel comfy sporting my bathing suit in Florida

-Figure out what to do with my Google Reader List (I’d be lost without it!)

Ok, after all of this seriousness, I had to finish the post with a funny!

The shortest month of the year has come to an end.  And boy did we get dumped on here in Chicago.  Even with the 30 degree weather this past week, the liquid winter just kept on coming!

IMAG1720

Tuesday, my office closed early.  What was amazing is that the roads were empty (everyone else’s office closed earlier), so I made it to my parents in record time to enjoy a quiet evening at home.  The past few days have been pure slush and finally today the sun is shining!

IMAG1721

February was an active and exciting month (snowshoeing?!) that left me feeling fairly run down by the end.  Thankfully, there have been more than enough healthy and warm breakfast options to get me going in the mornings.

IMAG1722

I have been training for my first race of the year (an 8k in April), running outside as well as around the indoor track.  We had a nice break from the cold spending a gorgeous weekend in Sarasota, Florida.  And the BOY and I are planning for another beach vacation soon!

Here’s to hoping that March goes out like a lamb and spring is right around the corner because I am ready for the sunshine, flowers, and farmer’s markets!  Don’t you agree?

How are you feeling this month?

What are you hoping to do this March?

February Goals

Sign up for the Chicago Marathon

-By some miracle, I made it and I’m in!

Try some classes (ie Bikram yoga)

-I still haven’t made it to Bikram or Barre which is a major fail on my part!

Avoid added sugars, fake sugars, and high fructose corn sugar

-So for the most part, I did great with this.  However Valentine’s Day was full of sweets and I had a rough week following that.  Luckily, I’ve been able to get back to my clean eating habits.

Maintain work/life balance

-I don’t even know if I should go here…this topic deserves its own post for sure, but I will save that for another day.  Instead, I will share the things I did to move towards balance, like weekly yoga, girl’s dinners, and quiet weekend mornings.

March Goals

-Try some new classes

-IRONMAN March (check out Caitlin’s website for the details)

-No added sugar

-Unplug more often

So we made it through January!

What do you think?

Is 2013 all that you wanted it to be???

IMAG1416

I hope so!  If not, there is plenty of time to get started on your new year’s intentions!  I woke up this morning to another sunny day with a fresh coat of snow covering my car.  The first thought that ran through my head was…I wish I had snow shoes!  I would go again this morning exploring the forest preserve by our house.

IMAG1463

Instead, I headed off to my weekly Hot Yoga class.  I stayed up late watching the Indiana Victory last night, so I didn’t make it to my usual 10am class.  As I was walking in for the 11:30 class, I bumped into my Mom and a friend who had just finished their class.  It was fun to chat about yoga and homemade energy bars, and my Mom mentioned that she was jealous that she missed yesterday’s snow shoeing adventure.

IMAG1466

After class, the BOY and I made a quick run to the crazy crowded grocery store.  Being that it is Superbowl Sunday, I was not in the least surprised.  We are spending the evening at my best friend’s house and had a few last minute things to pick up.  It is no secret that I am a huge fan of football, and even though I have no strong feelings about the winner of tonight’s game, I am looking forward to a good match.  It is tough to talk Superbowl without bringing up food, so I want to refer you to THIS POST dedicated to football food and the 2012 Beer Bowl

IMAG1515

I did make hummus and a new dip for tonight (pictured above with recipe to come).  However, we are doing something a little different.  We are straying away from traditional football food and having Indian food for dinner.  My best friend and I have been talking about getting together for Indian for weeks, so we thought it would be fun to combine the two events.

IMAG1530

It occurred to me this morning that it is already February, and therefore, time to reflect on the previous month.

IMG_0806

The month went by quickly, but really was a lot of fun.  I started the year with a clear head and some healthy soup!  I was nominated for the Liebster Award and shared some new info and old pictures.

I spent a bunch of time in the kitchen whipping up some healthy recipes…

Chickpea Butternut Squash and Red Lentil Stew

Chicken with Figs

Slow Cooker Turkey and Bean Chili

Clean Peanutty Thai Chicken

Lentil Chili

Along with a few sweet Treats…

Scotcheroos

Cookie Dough Pretzel Bites

Peanut Butter Bonbons

And the BOY and I totally robbed Yogurtland!  On the activity front,  I have been going to CrossFit and getting creative with my lack of gym membership by running at the indoor track.

IMAG1353

I didn’t write any specific goals for January, but really just tried to find balance, stay centered and stress free, and return to a healthier lifestyle mentally and physically.  So far, I’d say that I am on the right track, and look forward to carrying this good feeling on to February.

February Goals

-Sign up for the Chicago Marathon

-Try some classes (ie Bikram yoga)

-Avoid added sugars, fake sugars, and high fructose corn sugar

-Maintain work/life balancec

You can read my 2013 Bucket List for an entire year’s worth of intentions.

I have debated whether or not I should post a 2013 Bucket List, and then decided that I wanted to share some of my goals for the upcoming year.  One of the best bucket lists I read was Amy’s at Lavender Parking.  I love that she took a holistic approach to the year, so I borrowed the idea for my first ever (published) bucket list.

Gently Guide Yourself Back to Center January 1, 2013

Considering one year ago, the BOY and I were spending our New Years weekend packing for this incredible vacation, I’m feeling like I should be pulling out my suitcase.  Not this year!  Instead, I am packing away my tanks and shorts and rediscovering adorable sweaters and scarves.

Although this year has been full of some amazing opportunities and accomplishments, it has also been a challenging one!  I have felt off balance for most of the year and this is apparent in my workouts, eating habits, and overall energy levels.  As a whole, I really have so much to be grateful for.  The health and support of my wonderful family, the love and laughs I share with the BOY, a rewarding job, and close and loyal friends.  But my day to day rhythm is a bit out of sync and has been for most of the year.  For this reason, I am ready for the fresh start that 2013 offers.

IMG_6408

For the past few years, I have been writing a Why Not? List at the start of each year.  In 2011, I had Start a Blog on that list!  As I look through the 2012 list, I see some successes and accomplishments, a few ‘almosts’ (I’m talking about you half marathon PR), and some ‘haven’t even thought about it since January 1st’.  Oopps!  As I head into 2013, I think that I will only be able to  achieve the things on my list if I get ‘right with myself’ first.  This means that I have a few things to figure out in order to get myself back into my groove AND my skinny jeans.

Since I’ve spent the last few days on my couch, I’ve had plenty of time to reflect on the year and think hard about what I want to do in the upcoming year and more importantly, how I want to feel.  The first change that I need to make involves my diet.  Ahh…the dreaded ‘D’ word.  I believe I have commented on this before, but when it comes to diet, I like this definition from The Kind Diet , ‘a way of living, or thinking, a day’s journey’.  No restrictions or stigma attached…it’s just the foods we choose to eat.  When I first started this blog, I was highly focused on Clean Eating.  I read about it, I blogged about it, I cooked clean, and I felt great.  In this past year, I have lost site of eating clean.  It started gradually, a vacation dessert here or some processed snack there, and eventually disappeared from my radar.  I think that stress and lack of motivation played a huge role in this shift.  I still cooked plenty of clean meals, but was eating and drinking more than enough junk in between.  Not surprisingly, I put on weight, my skin broke out, my energy levels sunk, and my clothes don’t fit as well.  I have enough perspective to know that weight gain doesn’t define me and that I have plenty of wonderful things going my way, but deep down I know that this is not the way that I want to feel.  And so I am making the CHOICE to focus my diet on real, clean foods, that my 100 year old grandfather would recognize.  I also know that limited dairy works best for me and my tummy!

IMG_1247

The next piece that needs to fall into place is the ‘M’ word…Motivation!  What will motivate me to make healthier decisions when it comes to food?  First off, I know that I will feel better!  Secondly, but close behind, my health.  Maybe it’s because I’m in my 30’s or some of the realities that sunk in when I was sick a few years back, but I want to be healthy and active as I age.  I seek a quality of life free of metabolic disease and excess medications.  And lastly, there is a vanity component.  I want my clothes to fit well so that I feel confident in them.  I want to be proud of my muscles, showing off ripped arms in a tank.  And in the short run, I’d like to feel good in my bathing suit when the BOY and I got to Florida for a wedding in February.

I appreciate you sticking with me through this wordy post.  I wanted to share my recent struggles and step out of my comfort zone in case there are others who feel similar or you have successes that I can learn from.  Also, I felt it was important for me to sort through some of my thoughts and feelings to build momentum for the upcoming year.  Does this mean that you won’t see any more chocolate on my blog?  Heck no…I have a brownie recipe coming your way!  I love to bake and will continue to do what I love.  It just means that I need to manage my portion control better.

I am confident that clean eating will support the exercise goals that I have and will make the difference in me reaching my half marathon personal record that I struggled with this year.  I also know that it will improve my energy levels and allow me the clear mindset I need to make some important professional decisions in the upcoming months.

IMG_9479

I hate to bore you with more words…I’m a visual person and love pictures, but thought it would be good to make this post complete with a review of December’s goals.  If you are interested in reading more, here are some of my favorite books on the topic and here are a few more of my raw thoughts.  I had some more activity planned for my 2 week winter break but between my awesome trip to Florida and then this sad sinus infection, I didn’t accomplish all that I had hoped.  With that said, I am happy to end the year with a low stress level (the BOY and I have been really enjoying our downtime stuck in the house) and a clear plan for the year ahead.

I’m sure you’re wondering about the title of this post (why hasn’t she gotten to the point yet?).  These words were spoken during my New Year’s Eve Day yoga class.  I love the compassion and control she implied when she stated ‘Gently Guide Yourself Back to Center’ as we returned to standing from a back bend.  It struck me as I realized that it is exactly my plan for the new year!

December Goals

Avoid holiday weight gain

-Even with a vacation and being sick, I have managed to avoid the dreaded holiday weight gain.  I haven’t lost any weight, but stayed at a steady place, which wasn’t easy with all the sweets in our house : )

Twice Weekly Yoga (1x studio and 1x home)

-I started off strong but then because of vacation and my sinus infection, I have failed.

Strength training! Must figure out the gym situation for the winter.

-I have had a few training sessions with the trainer, but have not been doing much more than that.  I do have a game plan for when I get my energy back to try some new local classes and gyms.

Make the most of ‘winter break’ by organizing and decorating our house

-We have finally hung up some pictures and I did a massive kitchen cleaning.  Hooray!

How are you planning to stay centered in the new year?

I didn’t think I would be saying this again for a long time, but I’m spending another weekend in class.  I know…right?  It’s like I just can’t get enough!  Great way to dive into December!  The only reason it works is because I am a huge fan of the instructors, some of my friends from the certification course are also in the class, and most importantly, I don’t have to work Monday so I will at least get one day off this week!

IMG_9610

But first, I had to bundle up for an easy run this morning.  It’s been a week since my half marathon and I have enjoyed sleeping in and resting up.  But when I don’t exercise, I definitely miss my stress relief.  This morning’s sunrise was spectacular.  With frost covering the trees, a foggy haze in the air, and a pink sky, I couldn’t get over how beautiful my surroundings were.  I even saw 2 dear bounding along the path.  I was sad not to have my camera but loved soaking in the peaceful morning before driving to class.  It was the ideal way to start a typically hectic month, and I am hoping planning on keeping that peaceful feeling with me for the next 31 plus days!

I don’t think that I can move forward with my monthly recap without commenting on how fun and exciting it was to celebrate Peanut Butter Month with 4 new recipes!  My mouth starts watering just thinking about it!

IMG_9355

And, I may have discovered my new favorite Banana Bread!  We definitely ate well this month, and this Crabby Mac (and Cheese) is a new household favorite.   Along with this Turkey Meatball and Barley Soup.

IMG_9162

I’m not exactly sure where 11 months have gone.  I remember 12/31/11 like it was yesterday and some days it feels like it actually was yesterday.  But other days, it feels like this year has dragged on and been way more stressful than necessary.  I don’t think I have lived as healthy this year when it comes to food, emotions, exercise, or sleep.  Late in the year, I came back swinging with my healthy habits and have felt much better since doing so, but I still have a long way to go.  That being said, I don’t plan on putting pressure on myself to accomplish a year’s worth of goals in one busy month.  I think this is fair!  But, I do want to stay focused on ending this year on a healthy note with a big smile on my face!

IMG_4717

November Goals

Healthy Habits Continued…this month’s focus is on real foods and portion control

Good news!  I am still on plan with the healthy habits and the scale is starting to take notice.  I don’t think I will be in my skinny jeans by New Years, but hopefully early next year.

Half Marathon PR…seems like a reach, especially with my recent illness, but I’m going for it

So close!  I had a fun and successful race, and I am looking forward to breaking 1:50 NEXT year!

A 4 minute plank

     Did it!

Feeling thankful for a happy, healthy, and family-filled Thanksgiving

Easiest goal EVER! I have the most amazing family!  They make spending time together so easy and exciting and there is always so much laughter in our house.  For this, I am so very thankful!

*I didn’t have weekly meal planning as an official goal, but I do think that this accomplishment is worthy of mentioning.

December Goals

Avoid holiday weight gain (aka Healthy Habits Supersized)…No explanation necessary!

Twice Weekly Yoga (1x studio and 1x home)

Strength training!  Must figure out the gym situation for the winter.

Make the most of ‘winter break’ by organizing and decorating our house

Heads up…also coming this month Baking Bonanza 2012!

Get ready for some holiday cheer!

Did you have a good Halloween?

IMAG1072

Although most of our kiddos ditched us to go Trick-or-Treating (as they should), the staff had a BLAST modeling our costumes, especially this awesome 80’s getup : )

IMAG1051

So I don’t typically join on to exercise challenges (mostly because my follow through is poor), but I did participate in a successful push up challenge last fall.  So, I was highly motivated when I heard that Tina was arranging a PLANK challenge.  For all of the details, check out her post on Carrots N CakeThe main goal is to double your current plank time in 4 weeks.  The set up is simple…

Monday-Plank to Fatigue

Wednesday-Follow Tina’s Ab Workout (My Mom and I did the first one last week)

Friday-Plank to Fatigue (try to beat Monday’s time)

IMAG0712

Last week, my Mom and I each did a 2 minute plank (mine on my elbows), making our goal to complete a 4 minute plank by Thanksgiving!  About half way through Tina’s first workout, my mom asked me why we were doing this?  The answer…sexy, strong abs!  Is there any other reason???

Anyone else want to join in??? Looks like a simple way to improve the core muscles that you use every day!  I’ll keep you posted!

Now, onto the month wrap up…

IMAG1070

October has been a foodie month!

I ate TONS of quinoa

I made 2 unbelievable chilies, Red Chicken Chili and Poblano-Turkey Sausage Chili….and

I was a Bread Baking Fool, including this Pumpkin Banana Bread and Cinnamon Delight Bread

This is what else was keeping me busy.  Plus, I went to my first BEARS game of the season!

Man, it was a busy one!

October’s Goal

Keep up the Healthy Habits with focus on drinking water, chewing, following hunger cues, and limiting processed foods

Let’s call this a draw!  I have been drinking lots of water and working on slowing down during meals.  I have been eating more real foods, but I think WAY too much food.  Moving forward, I will be focusing on portions!

Create half marathon training plan for November race

My plan is set, but after being sick last weekend, my runs have not been up to par.

Find the Zen!

Yikes!  It has been a super stressful month, but I did have some quality down time with my Mom up in Door County.

IMG_8098

November Goals

-Healthy Habits Continued…this month’s focus is on real foods and portion control

-Half Marathon PR…seems like a reach, especially with my recent illness, but I’m going for it

-A 4 minute plank

-Feeling thankful for a happy, healthy, and family-filled Thanksgiving

How are you doing?  What are your new goals?

Living on Leftovers October 4, 2012

Filed under: Crock Pot,Life — Luv What You Do @ 9:33 pm
Tags:

Before, I left for Door County, you may have noticed…I mean how could you not…that there have been a lot of sweets, baking, and treats on LWYD the last few weeks.  I have come up with 3 reasons for this.  Mostly, we’ve been living on leftovers..ours and our parents : )

#1) The Grill

It is still warm enough to sear meat on the back porch which means the BOY is has been in charge of dinner, which I love!

IMG_7863

#2) The Holidays at the Parents

They sent us home with a significant amount of leftovers.

2 families + 2 holidays = Lots of Leftovers!

IMG_7997

#3) The Crockpot

I made these 2 recipes and ever since have been living on leftovers.

IMG_7976

So you see, although all I have been sharing with the world is the sweet stuff, we have been eating some nice healthy, well balanced meals over here.  That is until this past weekend in Wisconsin where my Mom and I lived on beer and cheese.  Because…let’s be honest, what is the point of going to Wisconsin if you won’t be eating beer and cheese?!

Now that I am back in town and life is calming down, I will definitely be making and sharing a lot more recipes, including tons of soup…

IMG_6697

September Goals

Continue with the Healthy Habits Recharged with focus on avoiding white flour and sugar, following hunger cues, and slowing down to chew

-Success!  I have done a nice job (prior to my weekend away) of sticking to my healthy habits and it has shown on the scale.

Ride a distance PR on my bike (anything over 52 miles)

-Nope!  I decided not to ride, but it was worthwhile…maybe next year!

Stay calm, chill, zen…whatever you want to call it.

-Goal Emerging!!!  I am definitely getting into the Yin yoga, which has helped.

October Goals

So I think since this month went so well, and I was able to get back into the healthy lifestyle that keeps me feeling my best, that I’m going to continue working towards the above goals with a few new focuses.

-Keep up the Healthy Habits with focus on drinking water, chewing, following hunger cues, and limiting processed foods

-Create half marathon training plan for November race

-Find the Zen!

Have you been trying new recipes or living on no bake sweets?

How did you do with your September goals?
